Psychiatric Evaluation

The definition of mental health is the state of well-being in which an individual can cope with normal stresses of life, can work productively, and realizes their potential. Psychological well-being encompasses several other aspects, to include:

  • Autonomy

  • A feeling of purpose or meaning in life

  • Positive relationships with others

  • Personal mastery

  • Personal growth and development

If you feel that your psychological well-being is not at the level that it should be, or if you think a family member could be struggling, a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation will help determine if there are any problem areas that need to be addressed.

Children, adolescents, and adults can all experience challenging behaviors, feelings, or conditions that can be made better just by targeting specific problems with a customized treatment plan.

Dr. Rangwani is available to provide psychiatric assessments (or psychological screenings). This assessment is simply the process of diagnosing emotional, developmental, or behavioral disorders with the intent of deciding on the best course of action to help put your life back on track.

Everyone has tough times in their lives. It is inevitable. But sometimes, a person has difficulty dealing with negative feelings. Depression, anxiety, trouble thinking, or avoiding people are not always just the normal “ups and downs” of life. It is best to get help dealing with overwhelming feelings as early as possible to avoid symptoms from getting worse.

Medication Management

Whether you’ve never taken psychiatric medications before or had a bad experience with them in the past, a new prescription can be an unsettling experience. Dr. Rangwani is committed to making your entire psychiatric journey as comfortable and effective as possible, including medication management.

Medication management begins with a diagnostic assessment to target mental and chemical issues. The assessment helps Dr. Rangwani determine the right medication to relieve the symptoms you are experiencing. In your course of treatment, Dr. Rangwani will monitor your progress closely to not only ensure that the medication is providing the desired results but to also watch for unexpected adverse side effects. Due to the different chemical make-up of each patient, a medication that works well for one patient will not work the same for another. Some medical management involves a careful system of trials and adjustments.

Besides prescribing the correct medications for a patient, Dr. Rangwani also provides coping techniques, life management skills, counseling, or behavioral therapy as powerful tools in treating mental health symptoms.

Understanding your psychiatric treatment and medication plan lessens the fear of the unknown and helps reduce patient concerns. Dr. Rangwani believes that patient education is extremely important in the understanding of the treatments being offered and the function of any medication used for the betterment of your psychological well-being.

Individual Psychotherapy

Individual psychotherapy is the joint process between the person in therapy and the therapist, both seeking a common goal in a confidential, caring, and safe environment. In the realm of psychotherapy, goals cover a wide range of topics as determined by each patient:

  • Change, inspire, or improve the quality of life

  • Help with life issues that are hard to face alone

  • Increasing positive feelings (self-esteem, compassion)

  • Learning to handle difficult situations (depression, anxiety)

  • Making healthy decisions

  • Reaching life goals

  • Becoming self-aware and continuation of self-growth

The Family Health Psychiatric & Counseling Center is dedicated to helping patients regain control in their lives. Psychotherapy is a means to learn about your condition, moods, thoughts, and behaviors and learn how to respond to them more positively.

Psychotherapy is also used to overcome life problems that are not necessarily categorized as a mental illness. The following are just a few other reasons to seek Dr. Rangwani’s help:

  • Coping with chronic illness or serious health problems (cancer, diabetes)

  • Coping with major life changes (death, divorce, loss of a job)

  • Handling depression or anxiety due to outside influences, such as your job

  • Resolving anger management issues

  • Recovering from abuse

  • Dealing with insomnia

  • Resolving conflict with someone important in your life

Marital/Relationship Psychotherapy

Marriage counseling, or couples’ therapy, is one type of psychotherapy. Relationships can be hard. Marriages require work to survive. Sometimes, couples need a little help with strengthening or rebuilding their relationships.

Everyday stressors can strain any couple and cause instability. If each partner is willing to address the problems coming between them and work on finding a reasonable solution, most relationships can be mended.

A few common relationship concerns include communication barriers, intimacy issues, financial difficulties, and lack of trust. Dr. Rangwani also offers premarital counseling, which will usually cover some or all of these same issues.

When problems start to interfere with daily functioning or when one or both partners are not certain the relationship can continue, it is time to call Family Health Psychiatric & Counseling Center.

Marriage counseling is most often short term and includes both partners, but occasionally, one partner will choose to work with the therapist alone. The situation determines the specific treatment plan.

While most marriage counseling is sought out due to troubled relationships, some couples might just be seeking a deeper understanding of their partner or want to work on rejuvenating their partnership.

No matter what has led you to Dr. Rangwani’s office, he is dedicated to providing the best psychotherapy services in the mid-Michigan area.

Family Psychotherapy

Family psychotherapy is designed to reduce distress and conflict between two or more family members by improving the quality of their interactions. This form of psychotherapy can be done with all affected family members in the same room at the same time or possibly with individual sessions, depending on the unique situation they are seeking to address.

Family ties are very important for good mental health, even though “family” isn’t always related by blood or even living in the same household. Family is anyone who plays a long-term supportive position in a person’s life.

Family counseling isn’t only for reducing conflict and improving communication but is also helpful for dealing with other family members who are struggling with mental health issues, addiction, or chronic medical conditions.

All families go through rough times. Stress, anger, and grief can affect all areas of life. Trouble at work or school, or just trouble managing everyday interactions with other people can be brought about by not coping with daily struggles effectively.

Family therapy starts with talking to each family member to establish the root of the problem and developing a treatment plan. While therapy can’t always make the problems go away, it can give family members new skills to deal with difficult situations in more productive ways. The frequency and number of therapy visits will be determined by the specific issues with which your family is dealing.

Geriatric Assessments

Family Health Psychiatric & Counseling Center offers geriatric assessments in Mt. Pleasant and Alma, MI. Older adults often have multiple health conditions and take multiple medications. Add to this, problems with finding caregivers, confusion over treatments and medication dosing, and possible mental decline, and a geriatric assessment may be the next step in protecting their functional ability.

Geriatric syndrome is the term used to define common health conditions that appear in older adults that are not specifically organ-based. A partial list includes:

  • Cognitive impairment

  • Fatigue

  • Dizziness

  • Sensory deficits

  • Gait disorders

  • Falls

  • Malnutrition

  • Delirium

These conditions may have a major impact on an older person’s quality of life and may also cause disability.

A comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) is a multidimensional diagnostic process that encompasses medical diagnoses, functional impairments, and social and environmental issues that may affect the patient’s well-being.

This assessment is the basis on which a caseworker puts together a care plan involving the different specialties needed to provide the best overall care for the patient.

Frail older patients often have multiple medical, psychological, and social issues that require multidisciplinary management. A CGA is the first step to determining the best management strategy for all areas of need. When an effective balance of care is found, the patient experiences a reduction in hospitalizations and improvement in well-being.
